Tourist SIM promises a seamless activation experience
With more than 25 million of tourists in UAE per year (source: Statista), du Telecom, from Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company (EITC) has introduced the ecofriendly SIM cards to the travelers visiting UAE to eliminate the quantity of used virgin plastic.
SIM cards are among the smallest consumer items in the world, weighing around 4 grams each.
However, 4.5 billion SIM cards are produced every year (source: ABI Research – September 2020), representing 20,000 tons of plastic –the equivalent of just under two Burj al Arab buildings.
Developed in partnership with Veolia, the global leader in optimized resource management, Thales EcoSIM was launched in 2020 and is made from 100% recycled polystyrene recovered from discarded refrigerators or any other cold appliance.
Offering a second life to the refrigerator interiors, Thales enabled an independent and exclusive green plastic supply flow to du Telecom.
At Thales, we understand that total emissions eradication isn't always achievable.
Hence, we've pioneered a custom carbon offset scheme to balance the remaining emissions from our EcoSIM offer to help du Telecom to achieve net zero scope 3 emissions by 2050.
Carbon emission reduction initiatives extend beyond materials alone. They encompass various factors, including addressing issues like short circuits and prioritizing the use of low carbon energy sources.
Ensuring the efficiency of electronic systems, minimizing energy waste through proper circuit management, and transitioning to low carbon or renewable energy are integral components of a holistic strategy.
By taking a multifaceted approach that incorporates both material sustainability and energy efficiency, let’s embark on an EcoJourney such as du Telecom did with Thales EcoSIM in order to contribute significantly to the overarching goal of mitigating climate change and building a more environmentally responsible future.
