The increasing variety of air threats is challenging airspace sovereignty and air defence more than ever.
For instance, technologies such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), which are becoming ubiquitous to theatres of operations, present a new range of challenges for detection. They are often deployed in swarms, saturating defences, and their high levels of manoeuvrability allow them to fly at lower altitudes than other air threats, remaining undetected for longer periods of time.
The complexity of the terrain for certain theatres of operations might also facilitate hiding of Rocket, Artillery and Mortar (RAM) threats in remote, hidden areas.
Medium-range radars are key assets to address this wide range of threats and challenges. To this end, Thales has leveraged its proven Ground Master 400α and naval radar technology to develop the Ground Master 200 (GM200) family of software-defined radars.
Best Selling Detection – GM200
The GM200 is a combat proven radar that has you covered on three levels. Capable of accurately tracking simultaneous very low to high altitude air threats, it can complement long-range radars in building an accurate Recognised Air Picture (RAP) in all types of operational terrains. When connected to short-range air defence weapons, it can also operate as a sensor for Ground-Based Air Defence (GBAD). Additionally, its ability to calculate launch and impact coordinates provides ground forces with a sense and warn capability against RAM threats.
Drawing on the GM400’s successful mobile capabilities, the GM200 can be equipped with a 20ft ISO container. This feature provides a higher level of mobility compared to other radars in the same market segment, ensuring asset survivability and flexibility to customer operational needs.
With more than 80 units sold around the world, the GM200s are now operating in various operational theatres facing 21st century threats in extreme climatic conditions.
Superior situational awareness – GM200 MM
The GM200 Multi Mission (MM) family design provides radar operators with more time-on-target in order to gather as much information on incoming threats as possible. It features new-generation 4D Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) technology, a unique ‘dual-axis multi-beam’ technology providing unrestricted flexibility in elevation and bearing. This enables the radars to provide high-end detection, tracking and classification capabilities, offering better theatre protection.
The GM200 MM family also features high mobility. Whether deployed as a container or in a compact version, it is easily airlifted or fit into a ground vehicle for quick operational functionality and enhanced survivability.
The GM200 MM exists in two versions developed to ensure adaptability to customer needs and operations:
- The GM200 MM/A (All-in-one) design enables the radar set-up in a fast time in 15mn from arrival on site to rapidly providing a full RAP. It features a Command and Control (C2) oriented configuration, which is integrated in the shelter - a 20ft ISO container – and includes two operator positions; this is very useful when integrated into a GBAD – up to MRAD situation. The antenna can be raised on a 8-m mast to avoid masking. Alternatively, for customers wishing to deploy the GM200 MM/A in a given location, it is also available as a fixed asset.
- The GM200 MM/C (Compact) is particularly suited for weapon locating operations and from V/SHORAD up to MRAD. Deployable in less than 2mn the radar ideal for taking ground forces closer to the frontline.
