Thales to equip Cibao International Airport in Dominican Republic with new Air Traffic Control Radar System

  • Instituto Dominicano de Aviación Civil (IDAC) selects Thales to install two new Air Traffic Control radars, a STAR NG (Primary Surveillance Radar), co-mounted with a RSM NG (Secondary Surveillance Radar).
  • Renowned for outstanding reliability, unmatched performance and the latest in digital innovations, the radar station will play a vital role in expanding IDAC’s Air Traffic Control capacity and airspace Coverage in the North of the country.
  • With 4 sites already in operation in the Dominican Republic, this new contract reinforces long-term collaboration with IDAC and continued trust in Thales - the first Thales radar being delivered more than 30 years ago.

Instituto Dominicano de Aviación Civil, the Dominican Republic air services navigation provider awards a contract to Thales for a fifth Air Traffic Control Radar, a co-mounted STAR NG (Primary Surveillance Radar) and RSM NG (Secondary Surveillance Radar) for installation at the Cibao International Airport.

Safe skies means safe transit through a number of given airspaces. It means that, at any given point in time, Air Traffic Control Operators (ATCO) must be aware of aircrafts’ position in their airspace to deliver efficient Air Traffic Management (ATM). Surveillance solutions are the “Eyes” of the ATCO. It means relying on a wide network of ground sensors enabling such coordination so that safety and punctuality can go hand-in-hand. It also means the detection capacity of non-cooperative aircrafts, playing a major role in air surveillance.

The co-mounted air traffic radar system - STAR NG (Primary Surveillance Radar) and the latest RSM NG (Secondary Surveillance Radar) represent the latest in technical excellence, offering the highest levels of detection performance, reliability, and cybersecurity to meet IDAC’ surveillance needs and ensure passenger safety.

The RSM NG – Thales’ latest secondary radar is a unique meta-sensor ensuring the quality, integrity and availability of data provided to Air Traffic Controllers, contributing to the aircraft’s 3 NM separation standards. The RSM NG combines ADS-B and radar (Mode S) data for faster track initialisation providing higher-quality information with reliability. The radar can track up to 2,000 flight tracks and share 64 data outputs simultaneously to different air traffic centres.

“We are very pleased to reinforce our collaboration with IDAC and contribute to securing the IDAC airspace. IDAC will benefit from commonalities on the current installed base and new radars, including training, common components and maintenance contributing to optimized life-cycle of the equipment” declared Lionel De Castellane, VP Civil Radars Segment Thales

Instituto Dominicano de Aviación Civil (IDAC) is the civil aviation authority of the Dominican Republic. It was a founding member state of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). IDAC is an autonomous State agency that regulates and promotes civil aviation in the Dominican Republic; its main missions are to regulate, certify, monitor and provide air navigation services for the civil aviation activity of the Dominican Republic, supervising compliance with national and international regulations, ensuring operational safety and contributing to the economic development of the nation.
