Ralf-Peter JANDER
Head of Dual Education
Ralf-Peter Jander has been organizing Girls’ Day since 2002 in his capacity as HR Head of Dual Education Arnstadt.

“The industrialization and production of our Transportation Systems division is based in Arnstadt. It’s here that we manufacture cutting-edge products and systems for train control and advanced rail signalling solutions. Our motto for the Girls’ Day event is “Experience and Touch Technology”, explains Mr. Jander – “and the young ladies learn how our technology makes global rail travel safer.

In Arnstadt we have our own training center, where we offer mechatronics technician and industrial electrician vocational training courses, as well as dual study courses in electrical engineering and automation technology. In our training center, the girls also carried out their small electronics project with the help of our apprentices and are additionally taken on a guided tour of our production area. I hope that this year we can again inspire the girls to take up a technical career.”

I’m actively involved in various STEM activities, including Girls Day where female students spend some time with us on site during a company tour and also visit our education center, and I’m also we have a Professional Field Testing STEM project, in which students discover and learn more about the requirements of a particular professional field in the STEM area over a period of several days.

Girls Day is focused around our education center where female students receive information about training and study opportunities. They have the possibility to talk with our apprentices about their impressions of the training, During practical sessions they attend various activities, for example, “electronics for touching” (a small electronic project), or “what can air move?” (Experiment with compressed air).

In the Professional Field Testing project, students take part in the following activities in a practical context: Company tour and individual workstations, information about training and study opportunities, Practical exercises, electronic project in our education center and learn more about the professional opportunities in engineering.

These initiatives are a success judged by at the very least the look of clear enthusiasm in the eyes of the students, and of course this is due to the great interest in the contents of the STEM projects, but there is also a big interest in Thales as well due to the awareness of the opportunities on offer.

Over the longer term the aim is to attract more schools and students for these projects.

“It is important to inspire young people in STEM. With these activities we are in a better position to attract and recruit motivated applicants for vocational training or for dual studies; and, we increase the attractiveness of Thales in our region”.
