Arnold SACHS
Head of Professional Education and University Relations
Arnold Sachs is in charge of Head of Professional Education and University Relations, for Thales in Germany, based at Ditzingen.

One of the projects Arnold leads is the Girls’ Day for Thales in Ditzingen, inspiring young girls to take up technical professions through first hand exposure to exciting projects with hands-on technology.

During the 2016 Girls Day at Ditzingen, Seven students were introduced to the wide range of activities undertaken by Thales within the Innovation Centre, and then went on to see some of the production areas for the radio and radar systems produced by Thales in Germany. And, they learnt more about the application-process for apprenticeships and study.

Arnold also ensures that hand-on experience is gained, and together with current apprentices provides practical exercises where they work on a small electronic project entitled “Flashing LED Girls”. At the end of session, there is a round table evaluation of the day.

One thing Arnold notes is that the students were very impressed about the videos in the Innovation Centre  - and just as importantly at the end of the practical sessions the projects work as planned too!.

All students during this day are intrigued to see more of new Thales building in Ditzingen and are equally enthusiastic about our technical fields.

When asked how do this STEM activity could develop over the longer term Arnold stated “we plan cooperation with a local school (Realschule) in the “Ready Steady Go” project later in the year, including career counseling for STEM vocational training, and also simulation of the application – process) – and we take part in education career fairs, in particular relating dual studies for technical courses. And I’m looking forward to the next Girls Day in 2017”

“Girls’ Day provides us with an excellent platform to purposefully introduce our company and our diverse career and development opportunities to young girls. When we hire young people to fill our vocational training and study course vacancies, we always target a balanced proportion between girls and boys. We’re delighted to be able to give the girls an insight into our technical professions because this field offers excellent career opportunities!”

Arnold went on to state “It is invaluable to inspire young people in STEM. It’s also helps us to support and improve the recruitment process for apprentices and students, particularly as Thales as a technical company becomes a more well-known Name in the Stuttgart region” .
