Thales in Egypt
Overview
Thales has been present in Egypt since 1973, providing customers with capabilities in Defence, Aerospace, Space, Digital Identity and Security. The Group’s vision is to contribute to developing security and growth in the country, whilst supporting state sovereignty, sustainable economic development and the development of local talent. This is fostered through the continuous local cooperation between Thales and the Egyptian state.
Local cooperation
As a long-term partner, Thales has been supporting industrial development and innovation in the Arab Republic of Egypt, in line with the country’s vision. Over the last few years, the Group has extended its footprint in new areas including main line railways, security for critical infrastructure and space-related products.
In 1982, Thales formed Arab International Optronics (AIO), an Egyptian joint stock company with the National Service Products Organisation for the local production of optical and optronic equipment.
Thales’ local presence is continuously increasing as a result of the country’s economic growth initiatives.
Solutions
Defence and security
Thales has a long-standing partnership with the Egyptian Armed Forces, supplying electronics systems for different platforms across all domains : Land, Sea, Air, Space.
Since 2000, Thales has developed a strategic partnership with the Ministry of Military Production encompassing a transfer of technology and local manufacturing of defence-related system.
The major contracts reinforce the long lasting relationship between Thales and the Egyptian Armed Forces in the supply of defence solutions including electronics on-board the Mirage 2000 aircraft, surveillance radars, optronics and tactical secured communications.
Thales equips Egypt’s Rafale combat aircraft with multi-sensor capability systems. The Egyptian Government has indeed ordered 54 Rafales since 2015. Thales, a member of the Rafale team with both Dassault Aviation and Safran, equips this combat aircraft with multi-sensor capabilities.
Aerospace
Thales has developed a strong partnership with the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authorities and is now one of the country’s main providers of ATC systems & equipments. The majority of Egypt’s territory is covered by Thales Radars systems.
Thales has also been involved in modernizing the Egyptian Aviation Academy, equipping it with the latest generation of simulators.
Digital Identity and Security
Since 2014, Thales has been very active in supporting digital transactions, financial inclusion and digital economy plans that are progressively implemented by the Central bank and Ministry of finance in Egypt.
Thales has also contributed to the launch of the national domestic payment Scheme Mezza with a payment application, which is one of the main payment tools promoted by the Egyptian government today to support financial inclusion of Government employees.
Space
Thales supplies Egypt with the broadcasting communication satellite Nilesat, providing television, broadcasting and broadband services to North Africa and the Middle East. The NILESAT 301 communications satellite built by Thales Alenia Space, was successfully launched in June 2022, and opens new services over Southern Africa and Nile Basin.
Thales and Airbus launched successfully in November 2019, Tiba-1, the new military communication satellite to provide and boost internet and telecommunication services across the country and also contribute to developing health, education and energy fields, not to mention improving services in government sector.
