Thales in Thailand

Overview

Thales has been present in the Thai defence sector for over 50 years when we signed our first contract with the Royal Thai Navy. Since then, our presence has grown significantly to support Thailand’s technological, employment and economic ambitions. Today, Thales employs close to 700 employees, comprising 90% Thai nationals, who are providing digital expertise and smart solutions for the Defence & Security, Aeronautics & Space, and Cybersecurity & Digital Identity domains.

Local cooperation

Thales brings its global expertise to Thailand while also providing services, long-term maintenance and support, and training for local teams to be self-sufficient in the long run. In 2017, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Defence Technology Institute (DTI) to cooperate on air defence and communications topics. This cooperation continues today

We work closely with a network of key industrial partners, customers and end-users to establish locally installed bases where knowledge transfer and training can occur. This helps us build longevity for our projects, entrench our local industrial footprint and build local expertise in the country.

Enabling safer skies in Thailand

Thales contributes to the safety and efficiency of Thailand’s air operations by providing state-of-the-art air traffic management (ATM) technology to Aeronautical Radio of Thailand and Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand. To date, we have delivered the world’s first fully integrated ATM system to Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi International Airport and a nation-wide ATM system which enables air traffic controllers to manage the entire Thai airspace via our sophisticated radars and navigation aids across countries.

In the air, our cockpit avionics suite and electrical systems fly onboard the Airbus A320, A330, A350 and A380 fleets operated by leading Thai airlines including Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and Thai Air Asia.

Pioneering technological capabilities of Thai armed forces

Thales is a long-term strategic supplier of defence systems for the Thai armed forces. With over 50 years of partnership, Thales equips 80% of the Royal Thai Navy’s fleet with state-of-the-art above water and underwater defence systems.

On the ground, Thales supplies electronic warfare equipment, combat management and communication systems, and surveillance radars to the Royal Thai Army.

To protect the airspace, the Royal Thai Army leverages Thales’ STARStreak air defence system which comprises the world’s fastest very-short-range air defence missiles and lightweight multiple launchers. Through an industrial cooperation programme with the nation’s Defence Technology Institute, Thales has delivered a C5i system that enhances operational capabilities of the army’s new BTR-3CS armored vehicle.

Accelerating digital transformation in Thailand

Thales sits at the forefront of Thailand’s digital transformation. We are the leading supplier of banking and payment solutions, including cards and services, to Thai banks and institutions. Leveraging our digital expertise, we also provide them with cloud protection systems and hardware security modules to secure the entire transaction value chain.

In 2018, Thales was awarded a contract by Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to produce 15 million e-passports over the next 7 years. Compliant to the highest standards of security set by the International Civil Aviation Organisation, the e-passport is one of the world’s most secure passports.

Bringing connectivity to Thailand and beyond

Drawing on over 40 years of expertise, Thales delivers cost-effective solutions for telecommunications, navigation, Earth observation, space exploration and orbital infrastructures. In 1997, we launched the Thaicom 3 satellite which provided access to satellite television and internet to Thai citizens for over a decade. Its successor, Thaicom 5 satellite, was commissioned in 2006 to provide communications services to the entire Asia Pacific region.
