HEMPT EV0, the best LEO to GEO small thruster for satellites
Benefitting from its expertise in space amplification solutions, Thales developed HEMPT* technology in the late 1990s. This new electric satellite propulsion technology was derived from the Traveling-Wave-Tube technology developed and mastered by Thales over the past 40 years.
Electric propulsion is used to establish and maintain orbital positioning throughout the lifespan of the satellite, as well as deorbiting the satellite when it reaches the end of its life. With a complete new set of performances, HEMPT technology is based on permanent magnets for ion confinement, and on a clear separation between ionization and acceleration zones. Thales’s HEMPT products deliver a complete range of satellite thrusters spanning from several hundred watts to several kilowatts. This product range offers high volume manufacturing and delivery rates, performance stability and reliability.
The HEMPT EV0 joined the family in 2019 as the best 700W thruster for krypton operations. HEMPT EV0 can be used with xenon, but choosing krypton is advantageous as it is 10 times cheaper than xenon, thus making the EV0 much more cost effective for customers, as well as reducing its fuel budget thanks to its higher specific impulse.
Last but not least, the HEMPT EV0 is more resistant to erosion than other technologies thanks to its permanent magnets and high-grade cathode, giving it a very high total impulse compared to competing technologies operating at the same point.
