Thales welcomes new academic role at University of Surrey

Thales UK is proud to announce that one of its leading subject experts in Information Security has been appointed Visiting Professor at the University of Surrey.

Adrian Waller’s new academic appointment at the university’s Department of Computing will run until 31 July 2017.

In his Thales capacity, Adrian works for Thales UK Research and Technology (TRT), where he is a Chief Technical Consultant in Information Security. This research and technology organisation applies a model of open innovation designed to maximise the company’s interaction with the academic research community, Thales‘s operational units and other technology providers.

Adrian joined Thales in 1997 after completing his PhD and a one-year spell as a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia. He is now responsible for providing consultancy and research expertise on a variety of security projects, across the Thales Group and for external customers, as well as governmental and other organisations.

Adrian has a strong track record in security research and innovation, and has published numerous papers as well as being the holder of several security-related patents.

Professor Waller graduated with a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Surrey in 1992, and then went on to complete a PhD in Pure Mathematics from Royal Holloway, University of London.

Adrian has worked in collaboration with the department for several years, including acting as industrial supervisor for PhD students, supporting teaching activities, and being a member of the Department of Computing’s Industrial Advisory Board.

I am delighted that Adrian has achieved this level of recognition amongst his peers in information and cyber security. His appointment will further strengthen the links between Thales UK and the University of Surrey, in the pursuance of new security technologies and methodologies applied to information and data.” Terry O’Sullivan, Managing Director, Thales Research and Technology UK
