Threats for critical infrastructures are on the rise. Cyber attacks already jammed the IT systems of whole districts, and disturbed digital processes considerably impaired their ability to act.
Especially in the field of Operational Technology (OT), advancing digitalisation – especially in the field of Industry 4.0 – leads to an increased coupling of production environments to external networks. This results in an exponentially higher attack surface for attackers and ransomware, especially in traditional production environments, which may have not been established according to the "Secure by design” security principle.
The cyber field is subject to increasing regulation by the NIS2 requirements. Companies are obliged to secure their IT according to the KRITIS requirements, and aim to orientate their OT by ISO/IEC 62443. Authorities, too, have to orientate themselves by the IT baseline protection.
The fact that many companies do not have adequate expertise in the fields of cyber security and OT security provides another challenge. Skills shortage in these specialised fields makes it different for companies to implement adequate protective measures, and to effectively defend themselves against advanced threats.
