Thales Australia and New Zealand's Digital Identity team demonstrates world-leading digital licence solution at global test event
Thales’ ANZ Digital Identity Team, global Digital ID Wallet Product Team, local partners Code Heroes and Aliva, and Queensland Department of Transport & Main Roads (TMR), participated in the 2022 ISO Interoperability Test Event for Mobile Driving Licence Applications in Brisbane in December. This annual event sees Governments and industry from all over the world come together to test Digital ID Wallet and ID Verifier solutions in line with the global ISO standard 18013-5:2021, and to work together on new standards to meet the digital identity needs of the future.
Hosted by TMR, the event was a key milestone in the Queensland Digital Licence project, providing an opportunity to demonstrate the Queensland Digital Licence Application (DLA).This technology will enable Queenslanders to have their driver licences, photo ID's and more, recognised and digitally verified around the world - the first jurisdiction to do so in Australia and New Zealand. This year the event attracted over 150 people, and double the number of regulatory attendees.
The Thales participation in the test event was led by Kamil Parizek, Technical Authority in Digital ID at Thales ANZ, and also included the software development and Digital ID teams from Perth and Sydney. A key achievement of the summit was to confirm that Queensland Digital Licence users will be able to use their Mobile Driver Licence both within Australia, and also internationally in jurisdictions that recognise the ISO standard. The results of the testing delighted our customer and partner, Queensland Department of Transport & Main Roads, further cementing the positive customer-supplier relationship.
“Thales, alongside our Brisbane based SME partners, Code Heroes and Aliva, are proud to be partnering with Transport and Main Roads to help deliver Australia’s first globally interoperable Digital Licence to Queenslanders,” said Thea Dedden, Director of Digital Identity, Thales ANZ.
TMR Deputy Director-General Customer Services, Safety and Regulation Geoffrey Magoffin said he couldn't be happier with how the event went.
“We were able to successfully test the Queensland digital licence against vendors from across the globe.
There were over 150 attendees over the six days of the summit, with most travelling from overseas. This demonstrates the enormous global commitment to ensuring mDL interoperability, which Queensland and Thales are a part of"

Thales recently became the first vendor in the world to be formally certified against the ISO 18013-5:2021 Mobile Driving Licence Applications standard, a huge achievement that solidifies our position as a world leader in Digital ID solutions.
The newly upgraded Queensland DLA, using this same certified technology, is due to be released to an extended pilot population in Townsville shortly, followed by state-wide release to all eligible Queensland residents in 2023. Collaboration between local SME’s, the Thales project team in Australia, our global Digital ID experts and Queensland Transport and Main Roads, has been key to the project’s successes to date, with customer and supplier teams working hand-in-hand.
Watch out for announcements from Premier Palaszczuk in early 2023 for updates on the extended Townsville pilot and state-wide release.
