The Legacy Centenary Torch Relay visits Bendigo
On Thursday 21 September, the Legacy Centenary Torch Relay made its way to Bendigo, Victoria. Three Thales staff members, Kate Wheatley, Josh Talbot, and Michael Cooper, proudly carried the torch through various stages of the relay.
The Legacy Centenary Torch Relay, which embarked on its journey in Europe earlier this year, reached Australian shores in May, visiting all 44 Legacy Clubs across the country before its final leg ending at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne next month. The atmosphere on Thursday was electric as the Torch passed through the picturesque town, carried by 24 Torch Bearers, including the Thales representatives Kate Wheatley, Senior Engineering Delivery Manager; Josh Talbot, Safety and CMS Support Officer; and Michael Cooper, Supply Chain Manager. Together, our people honoured the Legacy 'Promise' that has been etched into its history since 1923 and represented the Thales spirit and commitment to veterans.
I have learnt over my 7 years of being a Legatee with Bendigo Legacy, that Legacy is a family, it is a network of people coming together to support each other and those in need, Today was an emotional and rewarding day celebrating the wonderful work Legacy has done for 100 years. Thales has through my time with Legacy, been an integral part of its success and walking the torch for both legacy and Thales was a humbling experience."
Kate Wheatley, Senior Engineering Delivery Manager
Thales has a rich history in Bendigo, originally established in 1942 the site has played a pivotal role in producing over 2200 of our Bushmaster and Hawkei vehicles, popular not only with our customers and team but also by the local community.
One of the highlights of the day was seeing the Bushmaster on display outside Legacy House, further reinforcing the connection between Thales, Legacy and the Bendigo community.
What a proud day to remember for myself and children and family, I was honoured as a returned serviceman to be asked to carry a leg of the torch relay for Thales and Bendigo Legacy."
Josh Talbot, Safety and CMS Support Officer
Beyond the personal significance, the Torch Relay has served as a lasting symbol of unity in support of our veterans and their families, resonating deeply within Thales and across Australia. The roles played by Kate, Josh, and Michael in this historic event have ignited feelings of pride and camaraderie within the Bendigo community, strengthening the bonds they share.
The Torch now continues its journey towards Tasmania before returning to Victoria. To learn more about the Relay, you can visit the Legacy Centenary Torch Relay site here.
