Inventing the future through apprenticeships and traineeships
Apprentices and trainees play a vital role in the Thales’ Above Water Systems (AWS) business to ensure we maintain a diverse pipeline of talent and critical skills to stay competitive and fulfil our future customer requirements. Over the past 10 years AWS has assisted over 100 apprentices and trainees qualify in their chosen field building true Australian Industry Capability, which supports Royal Australian Navy personnel to remain equipped and safe at sea. AWS continues to offer apprenticeship and traineeship opportunities within the Maritime business to build a future we can all trust.
Natalie Genc, AWS Training and Capability Manager says, “Apprenticeships and traineeships play an important role in giving people the ability to earn while they learn, and the skills they need for the jobs of tomorrow. It gives them challenges and opportunities to learn from the ground up and be involved within an evolving business, working with talented people in a unique environment. We currently have 23 apprentice and trainee roles to fulfil for our 2024 intake. Skills range from Electrical, Electronics and Communications, Sheetmetal, Boilermaker, Project Management Office, Crane Crew, Health Safety and Environment, to Surface Coat Preparation and Mechanical.”
Rob Henderson has just completed his electrical apprenticeship at Thales and says,
“I joined Thales as I’m a former Australian Defence Force (ADF) member. Whilst serving I heard about Thales’ and its contribution to Defence and wanted to undertake an apprenticeship within a familiar environment. I wanted to learn my Electrical trade within a niche, specialized environment. This expectation was not only met but I also experienced working on multi-million-dollar Maritime vessels, with state-of-the art technology. Maritime is very different from typical everyday Electrician work. Running cabling on a Naval warship is not straight-forward, with specific requirements and guidelines to be considered and met.”
